As I had mentioned before, ADV Films got the North American distribution rights for Le Chevalier D'Eon, a 24-episode gothic anime (very) loosely based on the real-life adventures of Charles-Genevieve Eon de Beaumont (1728 - 1810), a swordsman, writer, diplomat and spy for King Louis XV of France. Though he was really a man, the Chevalier D'Eon lived the second half of his life as a woman.
The first story arc of the series, Le Chevalier D'Eon: Psalm of Vengeance will hit DVD shelves on February 20th, with an MSRP of $29.98. The DVD, which contains the first four episodes, comes in both an English dub and the original Japanese voice track with English subtitles.
Psalm of Vengeance sees our hero drawn into a mysterious underworld when he discovers the corpse of his older sister, lying in a coffin floating on the Seine River, with the word "Psalm" written in blood on the lid. In order to discover who murdered his sister, D'Eon must contend with sinister alchemists, zombies, the Russian court and a young man named Maximilian Robespierre.
As I've said before, Le Chevalier D'Eon has a pretty significant buzz behind it. Certainly the fact that Shochiku Studios, Japan's oldest film studio and responsible for fostering Akira Kurosawa's career, is behind this anime should be a good indicator of its quality.
